Unable to return home, about 3,000 Bangladeshis living in Sandy-devastated Atlantic city are waiting in their cars, along with their families.

They said police were not allowing the evacuees to return as the city’s water supply system had broke down, thus limiting the availability of drinkable water.

At least 98 deaths have so far been reported in the deadly storm Sandy. Of them, 39 died in New York City alone. Vast areas of New York including its Atlantic City were submerged.

Bangladesh Press Club President in Atlantic City Akbar Hossain told bdnews24.com that city’s 80 percent inhabitants were evacuated on Sunday ahead of the storm. Water level subsided on Wednesday, but the police were not allowing anyone into the city.

He said only taxi drivers and businessmen were allowed to enter. Almost three thousand Bangladeshi were stuck in the situation, he added.
