Ustad Chakraborty and Pandit Saha sway the audience

ustad_chakrabortyClassical music aficionados in Chittagong city enjoyed an outstanding first of its kind performance by Ustad Swarnamoy Chakraborty and Indian tabla maestro Pandit Samar Saha at Theatre Institute Chittagong on Saturday evening.  The programme was organised by Classical Music Students Forum, Chittagong, on the occasion of the 48th birthday of Ustad Swarnamoy Chakraborty, a noted classical singer and founder and general secretary of Sadarang Uchchanga Sangeet Parishad Bangladesh.

 Swarnamoy began his rendition with raga Behag. He then rendered a bandish written by Ustad Nirad Baran Barua, a classical music maestro from India, which was followed by a thumri written by the latter.  Through his extraordinary performance, Pandit Samar Saha demonstrated his reputation as one of leading tabla maestros of India. Samar Saha also inaugurated the programme with lighting mangol prodip.

 At the event, Somnath Halder, Assistant High Commissioner of Indian Assistant High Commission, Chittagong, said, “Swarnamoy Chakraborty is a noted classical singer from this country,” adding, “His relentless effort to promote his art among the lay public is not only commendable but unmatched.”  Professor Mustafizur Rahman, controller of Examination of Chittagong University, thanked Swarnamoy for his contribution to promote classical music in Chittagong as well as the country.

 Terming Swarnamoy a reclusive classical music artiste, Professor Tapan Jyoti Barua said he had a single minded passion for music.
