The ‘Bangladesh Coinage (Amendment) Bill, 2015’ was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad on with voice-vote.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith proposed for passing the bill in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Earlier on September 8, 2015, the bill was tabled for turning the Taka five-note as the legal tender note. reports BSS.

‘Presently the purchasing capacity or power of notes and coins of Taka 2.0 reduced significantly, as 26 years had already passed. Therefore, the present Act is needed to be further amended,’ he said referring to the necessity of bringing an amendment to Article 4 of Bangladesh Coinage Order-1972.

According to the bill, the finance minister said Taka five note would be a legal tender note.

He said if the government decision is implemented the total supply of money in the country would remain unchanged and there will be no impact on inflation.

In 1974-75 fiscal year, the legal tender coin was 10.70 percent of the total money in circulation, which came down to 0.90 percent in the last 2013-14 fiscal, the minister added.
