Facebook can boost stress to dangerous levels – especially among users with lots of friends.
Researchers claimed avid users of social media had increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Psychologists said teenagers with more than 300 Facebook friends were at a heightened risk of suffering from stress, which could lead to depression.
A team from Montreal University quizzed 88 adolescents aged 12 to 17 on how frequently they used Facebook, their number of friends on the social media site, their self-promoting behaviour and the support they gave Facebook friends.
Along with these four measures, the team collected cortisol samples from the volunteers. The samples were taken four times a day for three days.
