The 29th December of this year is the 149th birth anniversary of Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Au Chowdhury. He was born on this day 149 years ago. Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury was a benevolent zamindar of Dhanbari village under Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district of greater Mymensingh in Bangladesh. He was an outstanding sociopolitical figure of the then province of undivided Bengal in the British-Indian SubContinent during the period covering the last two decades of the 19th century and the first three decades of the 2Oth” century.
Nawab Ali Chowdhury was born on the 29th’ December 1863 at the house of his maternal grand father Muhammad Ali Khan Chowdhury, a zaminclar of the district of Natore of greater Rajshahi in Bangladesh. His paternal house is at the village of Dhanbari as mentioned above.His father Janab Au Chowdhury was a zamindar of Dhanbari. His mother’s name was Rabeya Khatun Chowdhurani.
Nawab Ali had his elementary education from his house tutor namely Nilkanta Roy of Kushtia. After that he had received his institutional education at the Rajshahi Collegiate School of Rajshahi and St. Xavier’s College of Calcutta.
With proficiency in English, Urdu, Arabic and Persian languages, he started his career as an Honorary Magistrate of Mymensingh. But soon he gave up the job and entered public life as a municipal Commissioner of Mymensingh town and a member of the District Board of Mymensingh.
Nawab Ali Chowdhury was a member of the Eastern Bengal and Assam Legislative Council from 1906 to 1911, of the Bengal Legislative Council from 1912 to 1916 and of the Imperial Legislative Council of India from 1916 to 1920. In 1921 he was returned as an ele$ted member of the Bengal Legislative Council and was a member of the first Ministry in the reformed council during 1921-1923.
