Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Abdul Hamid and Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Saturday underscored the need for protecting the environment of the Haor (wetland) region and improve the livelihood of the people in the area.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Second National Haor Conference at the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) in the city’s Farmgate, Speaker Hamid, who is also a resident of the Haor area in Kishoreganj district, said that the people living in the area were deprived of the advantages of an independent country.
“The people of the haor areas often don’t get the advantages that the people of an independent country enjoy. The people here live on the willing of the Almighty Allah,” he said.
He said the people of the haor areas were also the victims of the ‘dadan’ traders (persons doing business on advancement payment).
