Expansion: 40 teams could duke it out in 2026

The World Cup is expected to be expanded to 40 teams by FIFA as world football’s governing body look to bring in a wide package of reforms.

The proposal will be discussed at the organisation’s executive committee meeting on Thursday and the Press Association report that FIFA sources expect it receive widespread support.

This news comes shortly after two senior FIFA officials were arrested in dawn raids in Zurich this morning and is seen as an effort to appease FIFA members who feel that UEFA currently have too many spots in the current 32-side format.

The World Cup was last expanded from 24 to 32 teams in 1994 but a move to 40 teams would bring about a huge change to the competition.
