SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam and was accorded a ceremonial welcome on the second day of his visit to the country. Modi arrived in Singapore from Malaysia on Monday for a bilateral visit in the second and last leg of his four-day visit to southeast Asia.

His first engagement on Tuesday was a breakfast meeting with the prominent citizens of Singapore. “A breakfast pitch to begin the day. PM @narendramodi has an early morning meeting with leading Singaporeans,” Vikas Swarup, spokesperson of the external affairs ministry, tweeted.

On Monday, Modi was a “happy guest” on his maiden visit to Singapore where he had a vegetarian dinner with his counterpart Lee Hsien Loong and his wife at an Indian restaurant in Little India, a precinct of Indian-origin businesses, eateries and pubs. It was also the scene of the December 8, 2013 riots, the city-state’s worst outbreak of violence in over 40 years.
